Peter Falconio

Peter Falconio was a British backpacker who was
dragged out of his car and shot on the Stuart highway between Alice Springs and
Darwin. His body has not been found. In the trial for his murder the Defence’s
closing argument was that Falconio had faked his own death. They stressed a
number of factors including the absence of Falconios blood at the crime scene
and alleged sightings of him after his disappearance and hypothesised that a
third man had been involved to drive Falconio away from the scene and that the
police had planted evidence on defendant. The Prosecution urged the jurors to
ignore the conspiracy theory the unsubstantiated claims of police corruption
and they did. Bradley John Murdoch was convicted of the murder of Peter
Falconio.
