John Darwin

John Darwin faked his death by staging a canoeing accident to avoid debts and claim his life insurance. For the year until his death certificate was issued he lived in an annexe of the family home. John's wife, Anne, claimed the insurance monies. Using a passport fraudulently obtained using the name of a deceased baby he spent time in the US and Gibraltar. The Darwin's decided to settle in Panama and bought an estate with the intention of building a hotel and offering canoeing holidays. Their relationship soured and John Darwin returned to England. He turned himself in to the police claiming to have no recollection of the previous 5 years. Anne Darwin was surprised at his reappearance as were his sons who genuinely believed him to be dead.
The police were already investigating the Darwins after a tip off from one of Anne's work colleagues who became suspicious after overhearing a 'phone conversation. Pictures of Anne and John Darwin were subsequently discovered on a Panamanian property website.
Both John and Anne Darwin were sentenced to 6 years in jail.
