Kankanit Angkinand

Kankanit Angkinand was believed to have drowned in the 2004 tsunami. A death certificate was issued and a body cremated . Angkinand then underwent cosmetic surgery to avoid her creditors to whom she, along with her husband, owed 8.2 billion baht. A representative of one the creditors believed that she was still alive and asked police to investigate. Her children received 1.2m baht in insurance payouts. The scam was discovered when Angkinand tried to obtain a new identity card in a false name but her fingerprints didn't match her new identity. Police were suspicious and matched her fingerprints to those of the supposedly dead Angkinand.
